A Day in the Life of The Screen Savers
By Stacee Barcelata
So many of you sent in emails asking what a "typical day" was in the life of TSS. Well, being so influenced by that Time/Life series A Day in the Life, I thought I'd test out my photographic skills and throw together a photo journal of a typical Screen Savers day. Here we go...
9:00 to 10:00 AM Time to head into the TechTV offices, otherwise known as the SS Titanic due to the ship-like layout of the building. Kate Botello and Leo Laporte, Kate Winslet and Leo DiCaprio... coincidence?
The Halls of TechTV. This is known as "Town Hall," and is the central point of the TechTV offices. Escalators run between the floors, and we have a common eating area.
10:00 AM Kate enters her luxurious cube and gets ready to save screens. Notice the flower lamp in the back... the girl's got style.
Leo checks in to his cube, checks email, checks cell phone mail, and checks voicemail all at once. Ask Kate and Leo your computer questions by emailing thescreensavers@techtv.com.
12:00 PM Here we are in our daily show meeting. We go over the upcoming show and plan any future segments. We tend to eat a lot in here, too.
Kate takes the camera and captures Chris and me listening attentively in the meeting.
You know TV people and cameras... we couldn't resist a group photo at the end of the meeting. :-)
1:00 PM Lunchtime... time to take a glimpse of the outside world. Downtown San Francisco-- the view from our window. No one's complaining here.
The best vending machine around... all ice cream, all the time-- a perfect afternoon snack. My personal fave... the Dove Bar.
3:00 to 5:00 PM Time to head over to the TechTV studios. It's about a 5-minute shuttle ride from the office to the studio. Tom, Brian, and Kate, hanging out before the show.
4:30 PM Time for makeup. Kate dashes Internet Tonight's Scott Herriott with some blush. You look maahhvalaaas, darling.
5:15 PM Our pre-show meeting at the studio to review specific production needs. (We usually eat a lot here, too.)
5:30 PM Roger setting up a computer for the live show. Actually, he posed for this picture, but this is usually what he's doing before a show.
This is the view that Kate and Leo have from the set... cameras, cameras, and more cameras.
Taking a moment with Tux, who gets as much love as he gets thrown around.
5:40 PM Jen lends Kate a helping hand with her mike.
Chipping... otherwise known as preparing the cameras for air and "don't walk in front of the grayscale!" (Look closely in the background, you can see the grayscale bars.)
5:45 PM Ken goes over last minute changes before air. What do you think of those shades?
6:00 PM We're live. baby! Kate and Leo answer your computer questions. Give 'em a call at 888-989-7879.
7:00 PM That's it, show's over, and it's time to head home... well, everyone except Tux, of course.
There you have it folks... a day in the life of The Screen Savers. Is it what you thought it would be like? This is a rough outline of a normal day, if we have those. ;-) However, sometimes we're in at 8:00 AM and out at 9:00 PM. It all depends on the particular show, and every day is different.
Thanks for all the emails you sent in. I had a wonderful time on this viewer assignment. Keep those emails coming... what's my next assignment is going to be?

Stacee,
YHR
